Sketch for Survival is part of the Explorers against Extinction conservation campaign organised by registered UK charity The Real World Conservation Trust (No 1177505). The primary aims of the campaign are to raise awareness about the threats facing the world’s most iconic species and their habitats while also raising significant funds for nominated projects pivotal in the battle to protect them.

Once again I have donated sketches for the Auction they are both drawings in graphite pencil, a medium I really enjoy using. The first is of a Young Southern African Giraffe and the second is a Young Southern White Rhino

The weblink is http://www.explorersagainstextinction.co.uk/ where you can view the Online Gallery and bid for your favourite.

You will also be able to view the collection online from 1st September and it will be sold in an online auction concluding on the evening of Sunday 25th November 2018.

Tulsicon 2018 Conference at WWT Centre London 14th September 2018

The sun shone and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Cantre in Barnes looked amazing and created just the right setting for our Conference.  This international One Health conference had professionals from multiple disciplines to discuss the impact global health has on conservation. The conference allowed the participants to have their own FREE health check as well as the opportunity to receive FREE Basic Life Support (BLS) training.

I was privileged to be invited to set up a small exhibition of my paintings mostly of the Royal Bengal Tigers photographed by Dr Chet Trivedy during his visit to the National Parks of India. I also had the pleasure of presenting each speaker with an A3 signed Giclee Print of Sanju.

There was a lot of interest in my work and invitations to visit India and see for myself the beautiful Bengal Tigers in their natural habitat and also the next Conservation Expo in Canada.

Celebrating World Rhino day. Not sure where to begin as my very first painting of these iconic animals was of the ones I saw at Drifters Game Lodge in Balula Nature Reserve on the edge of The Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. I have since painted these in Pastel and graphite pencil both of which have gone to new homes. The Graphite pencil White Rhino was donated to the Explorers Against Extinction Silent Auction in 2017 and sold and I am hoping my submission this year will also be sold successfully.

Exhibition this October at Iguazu Falls of the Harpy Eagle https://judithmackay.com/harpy-eagle/ Fri, 24 Aug 2018 15:24:32 +0000 http://judithmackay.com/?p=1595

I am thrilled to announce that my painting of the much endangered Harpy Eagle  that I created for ABUN’s – Artists & Biologists Unite for Nature – Project Harpy Eagle has been selected by the Projeto Harpia for their upcoming exhibition in October in Iguassu Falls,

I really enjoyed painting this amazing Near Threatened bird. It is the largest and most powerful raptor found in the rainforest and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world. It usually inhabits tropical lowland rainforests in the upper (emergent) canopy layer. Destruction of its natural habitat has caused it to vanish from many parts of its former range, and it is nearly extirpated in Central America. In Brazil, the harpy eagle is also known as royal-hawk (inPortuguese: gavião-real).

A digital print of my painting together with a certificate of authenticity will be among the exhibits. They are also planning to put some of the images onto tee shirts and other saleable items to generate funds to help with the conservation of this amazing bird and its habitat.

I have included this photo to give you an idea of just how big the Harpy Eagle is

Punk Pride of Lions https://judithmackay.com/punk-pride-of-lions/ Wed, 15 Aug 2018 11:25:52 +0000 http://judithmackay.com/?p=1586

One of the Male Lions of South Luangwa’s Punk Pride

On my first morning drive into South Luangwa’s National Park, Zambia  back in 2013 we came across this amazing Pride of Lions slumbering in the early morning September sunshine. Bellies all full from a feast they had had the night before. There were around 19 lions in total a mix of males. lionesses and about 7 cubs.

Over the course of the next few days we came across this pride several times including this stunning male lying beside a female in the long grasses they were entirely separated from the Pride. He was not overly impressed with our intrusion on his courtship, but I couldn’t resist taking photographs of him, he looked so majestic with his amazing Punk style mane..

I really enjoyed painting this wonderful lion and mixing the colours to get his pale colouring just right.  Below is my progress with this painting of one of the Males of the Punk Pride in pen and Derwent’s tinted charcoal pencils on Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed 300gsm Watercolour Paper. He is a little larger than A4

The final stages of painting T38 a Stunning male Bengal Tiger

I have so enjoyed painting this fabulous male Bengal Tiger. I fell in love with him the first time I saw my friend Dr Chetan Trivedy’s photograph of him. Such a beautiful cat and so majestic.  Dr Tivedy photographed him in Ranthambore National Park Sawai Madhopur Rajasthan, India and kindly gave me permission to paint T38.

T38 Complete and Residing on the easel

T38 almost there

This stunning male Bengal Tiger T38 from Ranthambore National Park in India is now complete. He is painted in Unison Soft Pastels and pastel pencil on Hahnemuhule sand Velour. The painting is 34 x 46cm and is now sitting on my easel for the pastel to settle before being mounted and framed.  This is one of several paintings I have done of T38 which will be on display at the Tulsicon2018 conference on 14th September at WWT London Centre in Barnes

Work in Progress on T38 a stunning Male Bengal Tiger. This is another painting that will be in my exhibition at Tulsicon 2018 One Health Conference on 14th September at WWT London Centre in Barnes.

I decided it was time to give T38 some colour to show off the beautiful shades of orange of his coat and his black and white markings. My painting is done with #Unison soft pastels and the fine detail in pastel pencil on Hanhnemule Sand Velour. I am really pleased with the softness the velour creates for this beautiful tiger’s coat. He looks a very passive tiger, but I for one wouldn’t want to get too close!

The images below, taken on my iPhone,  show the various stages of my painting and I will post more as I continue to develop this painting.
