Having used pastel pencils for many of my paintings I bought a set of coloured pencils and also water soluble coloured pencils. There are numerous brands on the market but I was directed towards Faber Castell, Caran D’Ache and Prismacolour. I have seen the occasional fox on my morning walks in the woodland near my home and thought it would be fun to depict the Red Fox in coloured pencils.
It was an interesting exercise and very different from using pastel pencils. It requires layers of pencil to build up the depth and luminosity of his fur coat. Like pastel the surface makes a huge difference to the overall painting.
